Birth: Birthing Centers From the Eyes of a Chiropractor

As a Chiropractor, I look at the body as a self-regulating, self-healing, and self-adapting system. To this day it amazes me how the body works! So many complex functions happen in a perfectly coordinated manner without us even realizing. Awesome, just awesome! With that said, it goes without saying that birth is one of those beautiful processes that the female body can perform.

I recently read an article in the Valley and State section of the Arizona Republic about having a child in a birth center. Let me start by saying I’m a huge proponent of natural childbirth, whether it is at home, a birthing center, or in a hospital. I think it’s a beautiful process that that should be done with as little interjection as possible. Of course, we have great emergency care if something like happens. It was so fascinating and encouraging to hear Arizona now has 8 birthing centers and rising, double from 5 years ago. Also, from ’04-’13 the use of birthing centers has increased by 75%! This shows me that women are realizing the power they have to birth a child in a harmonious and congruent way. This mental aspect of childbirth is so important. Recently, it seems like medicine approaches pregnancy as an illness, which is so far from the truth. This aspect is approached very differently at a birthing center. This is likely because a midwife and doula are guiding and encouraging you through all aspects of pregnancy. Birthing centers look at pregnancy as a wellness family approach, and as a more personal and precious experience where your family should participate as much as possible.

You can see that the overall philosophy of Chiropractic and birth centers are quite similar. The power of the body is amazing and it has capabilities that far exceed our educated assumptions. Both empower the mother to a healthy and natural birthing experience.

As you know, at Ryno Family Chiropractic we provide care for many expecting mothers. It is very important to keep the nervous system connection between mom and baby subluxation free. It is important to check the pelvis and surrounding structures for misalignment that can affect the baby’s growth and development. If you are an expecting mom and desire empowering and motivating Chiropractic care call (623) 432-2543. As always, Charging Towards Health. Dr. Ryan Wilk, your family Chiropractor!
